A home is the most valuable asset of most people. More than 60% Americans agree that their home’s represent at least half their net worth. It comes as no surprise with so much personal attachment and financial investment that homeowners are inspired to put in some effort when it comes to home improvement projects.
Choosing your paint
Putting a fresh coat of paint on your walls is probably the easiest home improvement project you can take up. If you have a large room, the walls can be painted any color. Just be aware that colors, apart from white, will make it look smaller. Putting color on just one wall though will give the room a personal touch while not compromising on the perceived size. Clean whites are always going to be in vogue and will provide the perfect backdrop for decorations like paintings.
Preparation
Begin with preparation. Lay down a plastic drop cloth or canvas on the floor to protect it. If there are cracks or holes, fill them with spackling paste. You want it to be even with the wall. Don’t obsess too much though since you can sand it later. Your goal with the sandpaper should be to remove all the dirt and give the paint something to attach onto. Most people have drywall inside their homes which creates lots of dust. Remember to wear a dust mask or simply wrap a bandana on your face. You’re now ready to paint.
Painting process
It is recommended you buy some paint booties and put them on your shoes when on the drop cloth. Remove them whenever you leave the painting area. You wouldn’t want the headache of cleaning up paint you have tracked through your home. It can turn a simple clean-up into one which can last multiple weeks.
You should consider adding a primer before you paint even though it might not be necessary every time. If you are painting over white with more white or a color, you could consider skipping this step. But if you are trying to cover up dark colors with white, you will have to apply a primer. If you are going to paint the trim too, do not worry about spilling since you will be covering over it eventually. If you are painting just a single surface, use painter’s tape in order to outline the boundary of the surface. When you’re on the final color, begin by cutting in using an angled brush around the surface edges. Once you have painted in the edges, fill a rolling tray with enough paint to fill the base reservoir. Do not overfill this tray. Roll the paint on thickly but watch out for drips. If you use extra paint it is going to run down eventually and ruin the finish. Allow it to dry, take off the tape and use a touch up brush in order to correct any imperfections.
